StoolSense

Privacy policy

Effective date: April 5, 2026

This policy explains how StoolSense ("StoolSense", "we", "us") collects, uses, and protects information when you use the StoolSense mobile app or website. For questions or requests, email support@stoolsense.app.

StoolSense is operated by an individual based in Portugal.

1. App data — what we collect

The StoolSense app is designed with local-first privacy. Almost everything stays on your device.

  • Health logs — stool entries (Bristol type, time, urgency, notes), meal logs, check-ins, and symptom tags are stored in a SQLite database on your device only. They are never uploaded to our servers.
  • Photos — if you attach a photo to a log entry, the image is processed in-memory by an AI vision model (see Section 3) and then discarded. Photos are never stored on our servers or in any database. They remain in your device's local storage only if you choose to keep them there.
  • Research participation — if you opt in to research, we may export a structured summary of your logs (counts, aggregates, and Bristol ratings). Raw photos and free-text notes are never included in research exports.

2. Website data — what we collect

  • Waitlist email address when you submit the waitlist form.
  • Attribution (the page you came from and optional UTM tags) to understand which pages and campaigns drive sign-ups.
  • Analytics events (page views and aggregated measurements) if you consent to analytics.

3. AI photo analysis

When you submit a photo for analysis, the image is sent over an encrypted connection to a Supabase-hosted proxy. The proxy forwards the image to one or more AI vision providers (currently Google Gemini and OpenAI) to generate a Bristol-type estimate and brief description.

Key facts:

  • The image is processed in memory only — it is not written to any server-side database or storage bucket.
  • The AI providers process images under their standard API terms. They do not use API-submitted images to train their general models.
  • Only the text result (type estimate, description) is returned to your device and stored locally.
  • You can use the app fully without ever submitting a photo.

4. How we use your information

  • App health logs: displayed back to you in the app only. Never transmitted to us.
  • AI photo analysis: to generate a Bristol estimate and description for your personal use.
  • Research exports (opt-in): to improve the product and contribute to anonymized gut-health research.
  • Waitlist email: to contact you about beta access and product updates.
  • Site analytics: to improve pages and messaging.

5. Deleting your data

Because all structured health data lives on your device, you are always in control. To permanently erase all app data, go to Settings → Wipe local data. This action is irreversible and removes all logs, photos, and preferences stored by the app.

To request deletion of your waitlist entry or any data we hold server-side, email support@stoolsense.app.

6. Cookies, storage, and consent

On the website, we offer an analytics preference prompt. If you reject analytics, we do not load Google Analytics. You can change your preference at any time via "Cookie settings" in the footer.

We store your analytics preference in localStorage. For attribution on the waitlist form, we may temporarily store UTM values and the referring page in sessionStorage.

7. Third-party services

  • Supabase — hosts our API proxy for AI photo analysis and our waitlist database.
  • Google AI (Gemini) — processes photos in-memory for Bristol classification.
  • OpenAI — processes photos in-memory for Bristol classification (used alongside or as fallback to Google AI).
  • Vercel — hosts the website and may provide aggregated web analytics.
  • Google Analytics — used on the website only if you consent.

8. Data retention

  • App health data: retained on your device until you delete it.
  • Photos submitted for AI analysis: discarded immediately after processing — never retained server-side.
  • Waitlist email: retained until you unsubscribe or request deletion.

9. Your rights (GDPR)

If you are in the EU/EEA or UK, you have rights under GDPR including:

  • Access — request a copy of data we hold about you.
  • Erasure — request deletion of your personal data.
  • Portability — request your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
  • Correction — request correction of inaccurate data.
  • Objection — object to certain uses of your data.

To exercise any of these rights, email support@stoolsense.app. We will respond within 30 days.

10. Children

StoolSense is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted data, contact us and we will delete it promptly.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The updated version will be posted at this URL with a new effective date. If changes are significant, we will notify you via the app or by email.
